Process Technology Group

The Steelmaking Process Technology Group was formed in 1999 to provide a technical support service with a strong focus on slag- and steelmaking practices. The PTG works with the customer to solve metallurgical process issues and develop practices to produce a quality product at a low overall unit cost.
A variety of slag and process models are used and particular areas of expertise are offered in the following fields:

  • Slag-metal equilibria, and the application to furnace, converter, ladle, tundish and mould operations.
  • Slag-refractory equilibria: The design of slag compositions to enhance the quality of steel and achieve/maintain refractory compatibility.

  • Prediction of inclusion formation, in terms of types and semi quantitative predictions.
  • Solutions to the formation of inclusions and the improvement of steel quality and caster operations.
  • Improving steelmaking operations in carbon, stainless, and alloy steel production, through addition practices, raw materials, ladle, tundish practices and caster practices.
  • Slag foaming for carbon steelmaking.
