Ingot casting plants today are faced with the same steel cleanliness demands as plants using the continuous casting route. They require bottom-pouring refractory material with reduced wear and improved dimensional accuracy.
LWB Refractories can draw on more than 80 years of experience in the field of ingot casting to provide the high level of products and services.
To meet these demands LWB has developed new products and offers optimised design through mathematical modelling. Installations without mortar, using dry-pressed centre runners and runner bricks, and casting very high ingots is now possible without any problems.

Our newly developed grades NORMA 72 and EXAKTA 72 – containing very low free silica in the brick matrix – allow casting of problematic steel grades (e.g. high in manganese) with low levels of non-metallic inclusion resulting from refractory wear. The use of our simulation software to optimise the geometry of the refractory system and reduce speed and turbulence of the steel flow can further reduce refractory wear.
The software also provides valuable process information, e.g. velocity and temperature of the steel in the ingot, with respect to optimising the quality and yield of the final product as well as reducing operating costs.
