LWB Cement Industry

Cement and Lime Industry

There are many factors that influence rotary kiln lining life: Burning process, kiln dimensions, raw materials, fuel consumed and type of clinker produced. With this combination of factors each rotary kiln lining requires its own specific refractory configuration.

LWB offers a broad range of refractory products to extend rotary kiln service life.

Typical rotary kiln lining

Fired Doloma and Magnesia-Doloma Bricks

Fired doloma and magnesia-doloma bricks are engineered to resist chemical attack in the rotary cement and lime kiln burning zones. These brick qualities are also unique in their ability to form a protective coating.

The reaction between refractory and clinker forms a solid and stable coating on the hot face of the doloma or magnesia-doloma lining. The wear of the refractory surface is reduced due to the formation of this coating. Furthermore the coating gives protection against clinker temperature loss and reduces the temperature of the kiln shell.

The growing use of alternative fuels has drastically increased the demands on the refractory lining. Our magnesia doloma qualities are an optimum alternative for the sintering zone. The new third generation magnesia doloma qualities are improved by an optimisation of the granulometry and a zirconia addition. As a result, these qualities are more dense with low porosity and permeability. Despite the high density LWB managed to improve their thermal shock resistance to an extent that these bricks offer thermo-mechanical properties similar to magnesia spinel bricks. In addition the resistance against chemical corrosion by SO3, Cl gases has been clearly improved by enrichment with magnesia.

Fired Magnesia-Spinel Bricks

Magnesia spinel qualities of the third generation are based on high quality, pure raw materials, mainly periclase and synthetic preformed magnesia spinel as well as alumina additions which during the firing process react with the magnesia and form reaction spinel.

Due to the special grain size distribution the qualities have a high thermal shock resistance. The low porosity as well as the use of pure raw materials ensure a high resistance to chemical attack by SO3, Cl gases in the kiln. The magnesia spinel products can be used throughout the  basic zone of the rotary kiln.

Special Products

LWB Refractories has developed several special products for cement and lime applications:

  • Inlet or outlet cones for rotary kiln
  • Pillar construction in Maerz or GRP kiln
  • Trifoil and Quadfoil Heat Exchanger

A heat exchanger is essentially a modular precast, prefired tre- or quadfoil, made from high strength alumina castable.
The target application is 1,250°C.

Operating advantages

  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Lower SO2 generation
  • Increased production
  • Reduced chain wear by temperature reduction
  • Reduced O2 demand
