The demands placed on refractory materials are growing as the requirements of the steel industry and its end users are growing. LWB Refractories operates two R&D centers (Hagen, Germany and York, PA. USA), with a staff of more than 20 high qualified and motivated engineers and technicians to improve existing products and to develop new ones to meet new demands. Often this is achieved in close cooperation with the customer to find specific individual solutions.

The R&D team is supported by the technical marketing department, experts in optimising refractory linings and compatible steelmaking practices and providing customer training.
A comprehensive range of technical models and tools for the evaluation of metallurgical processes from foamy slag in the EAF to inclusion control in the ladle and casting process supports this service.
